About
Southern Living Review looks at the region through the things people make, say, eat and share. We write for curious readers who want more than a postcard version of the South, while recognising that no single account can represent every Southern place or experience.
What we cover
Our subjects include foodways, regional language, customs, landscapes, architecture and material culture. We favour stories that explain how a practice or place works, where its meaning comes from and what changes when it moves across time or geography.
How we approach it
We distinguish a local example from a regional rule and avoid treating tradition as fixed or universally shared. When a subject has more than one interpretation, we make room for that complexity rather than forcing it into a tidy slogan.
Who we write for
Our readers may know the region well or be encountering its customs and places for the first time. We aim to provide enough context for both, with clear explanations and room for a reader to reach their own view.
A region is more than its familiar symbols.
Southern life varies from place to place and changes over time. We look at its details with curiosity, context and a healthy suspicion of easy generalisations.
